Social & Political Activism

This cluster explores civil-society activism, comparative protest events, and theories of hegemony and resistance.  It explores many types of activism, meaning that colleagues and PhD students within this cluster work on a wide variety of projects in various contexts. The research cluster explores how activism has been harnessed, performed, and transformed by different social groups across time and space. It draws on data and conceptual insights derived from different empirical contexts to explore and critique the concept of an ‘activist’ and how activism is expressed in different socio-political contexts. The cluster offers a unique point of access to resources and opportunities for encouraging co-operation on research which harnesses the strengths of regional and globally comparative perspectives to explore how activism is leveraged and expressed by social/political groups, including research into minority group activism, youth activism, anti-corruption activism, and state-driven activism.
