British Academy Visiting Fellowship

British Academy - Visiting Fellowships 2025

The British Academy’s Visiting Fellowships programme offers overseas academics a chance to work at UK institutions for three to six months. The programme is open to scholars in humanities and social sciences at any career stage. Through the Visiting Fellowships, the Academy aims to:

  • Enhance and build new links between scholars anywhere in the world and in the UK;
  • Foster opportunities and develop future partnerships for collaborative research in the humanities and the social sciences, and enable academics from across the globe to undertake research and/or professional development with UK colleagues;
  • Strengthen the UK’s research base in the humanities and the social sciences.

 

Suitable candidates for the Fellowships include researchers active within any discipline within the humanities or the social sciences. They may be talented early career scholars who have only recently obtained their PhD degree; mid-career researchers; or established academics with a considerable track record of achievement. Candidates should be based outside the UK at the time of application. Applicants already living, working or researching substantially in the UK are not eligible to apply.

The Oxford School of Global and Area Studies will support applications to the scheme and it holds an annual internal competition to decide which application(s) will be put forward under the scheme. Those interested in applying for this scheme must follow the  OSGA internal application procedure as follows:

  • By 16 September 2024, please email your CV and expression of interest by using THIS FORM to: research@area.ox.ac.uk OSGA’s internal panel will provide information about the shortlisted proposals within 5 working days. The OSGA Research Committee will short-list candidates based on their expression of interest and CV.  Priority will be given to proposals that could foster collaborative cross-regional and cross-country interdisciplinary projects on topics related to Global and regional orders, Social and political activism, Institutional change, Intersectional and gender inequalities, and Methods, in line with the OSGA Thematic Research Cluster.

 

  • By 02 October 2024, candidates who have been shortlisted will be invited to send a complete application to: research@area.ox.ac.uk with a CC to: francesca.tucci@area.ox.ac.uk (at this stage DO NOT submit it via the Flexi Grant portal). The applicant can send a pdf file of the draft application downloaded from the portal

 

  •  By 16 October 2024, proposals selected for OSGA’s support must be completed and submitted via the Flexi Grant portal, in order to meet the funder deadline of 23/10/2024.

British Academy International Fellowship 2023

The British Academy and the Royal Society run the International Fellowship scheme 2023. The International Fellowships Programme enables researchers to work for three years at a UK institution with the aim of building a globally connected, mobile research and innovation workforce.  

The objectives of this scheme are as follows:

  • Attract talented international early career researchers to establish and conduct their research in the UK.
  • Support international early career researchers to pursue high-quality and innovative lines of research.
  • Provide international early career researchers opportunities to acquire and transfer new skills and knowledge through training and career development.
  • Foster long-term relationships through networking opportunities and the International Fellowships alumni programme.

Research must be within the British Academy’s remit of the humanities and social sciences.

  • By 21 March 2023  proposals selected for the OSGA’s support must be completed and submitted via the Flexi Grant portal.
